Quebec Taxiway, Gatwick Airport
Gatwick needed a new taxiway link and an upgrade to its existing taxiways to bring the airfield up to a standard that could handle the Airbus A380. VolkerFitzpatrick took the main contract, and TAG delivered the civils package in close partnership with them from March to August 2019.
This was fully TAG-managed and TAG-controlled work, airside, in phases that switched between day and night shifts as the programme demanded. The scope covered 4,000m² of new wetlean and PQ concrete pavement, 400 metres of new reinforced F900 Gatic slot drains and their surrounds, and 12 new reinforced concrete catchpits. TAG also installed new secondary ducting to the airfield ground lighting within the pavement structure, upgraded the existing PQ taxiways, and precast and installed the reinforced concrete bases for new signage.
Running that scope airside meant TAG carried the management responsibility that goes with it: planning, monitoring and updating the programme, implementing temporary works designs, and making sure every operative had the skills, training and experience the work demanded, plus the airside passes to be there at all.
That combination, technical delivery and site management under one roof, is what let VolkerFitzpatrick hand over a £550,000 package with the confidence that TAG was managing its own risk on their behalf, not just following instructions.
