London City Airport Concrete Bay Replacements
London City Airport's annual maintenance programme meant replacing worn concrete bays across the runway, apron and taxiways, a job that only exists in the narrow windows an operational airport can spare. TAG was contracted through Tarmac to deliver it, replacing up to 50 bays per summer over a three-year run from 2013 to 2015.
The rhythm never changed: arrive on a weekend possession at 13:00 Saturday, and hand the area back by 11:00 Sunday. In that window, TAG saw cut and removed the existing PQ concrete bays, cleaned out and prepared each one for replacement, and inspected and repaired the lean concrete base beneath wherever it needed it.
Up to eight PQ bays went in during a single weekend possession, placed, compacted and finished in P450 high early strength concrete so they'd cure fast enough to take trafficking by midday Sunday. TAG was back on site that morning to clean the areas, check the new bays, clear any FOD and formally hand back to airport operations.
Over three summers and a £1m contract, that cycle repeated itself dozens of times, always to the same deadline, always with the airfield open again by Monday.
