Stansted Airport New Divert Stand
Stansted needed somewhere new to park its biggest aircraft. The answer was a brand-new Code 4E stand, built to take wide-bodies with a lead on/off to match, and Galliford Try turned to TAG under an NEC3 Option A contract to build it.
The scope was substantial: shuttering and formwork across the whole footprint, 8,500m² of 175mm-thick dry lean concrete as the base course, and 8,000m² of PQ concrete finished on top of it. TAG also prepared and placed reinforced PQ at the taxiway service crossings and formed a channel for a new Gatic slot drain, work that has to be right first time on an operational airfield.
Every square metre of that concrete was hand laid. On a programme with a short window and no tolerance for slippage, that was a deliberate choice, control over speed, precision over shortcuts.
It paid off. The £180,000 project was handed back with time to spare on the programme, a new stand ready to take aircraft the size the one pictured here, built entirely by hand to the standard Stansted's operations team needed.
