T2B Apron, Heathrow Airport
Terminal 2B's apron needed a pavement that could take the weight and the wear of daily wide-body traffic, laid to a programme set by one of the busiest airports on earth. Ferrovial Agroman, working for BAA, brought TAG in to place it.
This was a labour-only scheme, which meant the finished quality rested entirely on the hands doing the work. TAG operatives placed and prepared wetlean concrete as the sub-base, then followed with high-quality PQ concrete, both handlaid and slipformed, depending on what each section of apron demanded.
The output speaks for the crew we put on it: handlaid PQ concrete going in at 150 to 200 cubic metres a day, and slipform paver PQ running at 180 to 200 cubic metres an hour where the geometry allowed it. That's the kind of production rate that keeps an apron closure short and an airport moving.
Delivered for £2.4m, the T2B Apron package shows what a labour-only contractor can add when the trades on the ground are the ones setting the pace, not just following someone else's.
