C300/410 Precast Segment Yard, Crossrail
Crossrail's C300/410 contract needed 11.72km of western running tunnel lined from end to end, and every metre of that tunnel needed a precast concrete segment to hold it. The BFK joint venture of Bam, Ferrovial and Kier turned to TAG to run the precast segment yard at Old Oak Common that would supply them.
The yard's job was to keep multiple tunnel boring machines fed without ever becoming the bottleneck. At its peak, TAG's production line cast up to 216 segments a day, a rate built to match the tunnelling programme rather than slow it down.
Over the course of the contract that yard cast 75,000 segments in total for the western running tunnels, using 89,000m³ of concrete to do it, output on a scale that put TAG at the centre of one of the largest civil engineering projects in Europe.
When the final segment came off the line at Old Oak Common, it was signed by the workforce who'd cast every one before it, a fitting mark on a job defined by consistency, thousands of segments in, day after day, to the same standard as the first.
