A11 Wymondham Concrete Repairs
Associated Asphalt brought TAG in to carry out a programme of partial-depth repairs to the A11 at Wymondham for Highways England, targeting defective sections of the road's continuously reinforced concrete pavement. The brief called for the top 100mm of each patch to be removed and replaced with a rapid-setting concrete that would restore the running surface to a better standard than before.
The works ran under full overnight closures, starting at 21:30 and handed back to the public by 05:00, over a compact two-week programme. Each shift followed the same sequence: saw cut the patch perimeter, plane or break out 100mm of defective material, sweep and prepare the surface, let Highways England inspect the sub-layer, then place the new CSA rapid-set concrete.
Where possible, TAG planed rather than broke out each patch, leaving a clean, uniformly roughened surface that bonded reliably with the new repair layer and saved valuable time on a demanding shift pattern. That mattered because the working conditions gave no room for slow-curing materials: overnight temperatures sat between 2°C and -2°C, yet the concrete still had to reach 25N/mm² before the 05:00 handback.
Every repair was tested on site by Schmidt hammer, with concrete cubes taken as backup for quality control. The programme was delivered successfully despite the cold, with Associated Asphalt and TAG carrying the approach forward into a follow-on phase of works.
