M20 Junction 10a Improvement Scheme

The M20 carries heavy volumes of freight and holiday traffic between the Channel ports and the rest of the country, and Highways England's Junction 10a scheme set out to relieve it with an entirely new junction: a roundabout over the motorway, new slip roads, a link road to the A2070, traffic signals and two three-lane bridges, alongside the removal of the old Junction 10 slip roads and a new pedestrian and cycle bridge replacing the demolished Highfield Lane Bridge.

Vinci Construction UK and Taylor Woodrow brought TAG in to deliver and manage every element of the reinforced concrete structures, bar the road closures themselves. That covered lifting and installing precast parapet units on the two interchange structures and precast bridge beams on the two Lacton slip road structures, breaking down and trimming CFA piles with hydraulic croppers, fixing all reinforcement and couplers, and supplying and installing formwork including an F6 feature-finish abutment form.

TAG also placed all blinding and structural concrete by skip and pump across every element, procured and supplied the temporary works designs and stability checks for its own scope, managed access at height using a mix of proprietary systems and tube-and-fitting scaffold, and installed polysulphide sealant to the joints between precast elements.

Delivered under an NEC Option A contract across a 13-month programme, the scheme gave the M20 a new junction built to take its international freight traffic for decades to come.
