Southall Waterside Bridges
The Southall Waterside development needed new road crossings over two very different obstacles, and FM Conway turned to TAG to build both. At Yeading Brook, TAG lifted post-tensioned concrete beams onto neoprene pads over a high-tolerance bearing shelf, then formed full-height diaphragms and infilled between the beams, with abutments founded on pilecaps and every construction joint protected by hydrophilic strip and backstop water bar.
The Yeading Brook structure used GRP permanent decking with low-level transverse reinforcement through the post-tensioned beams, a deck slab on plinths, and a parapet cast on cantilever falsework once the diaphragms had cured, plus sloping wing walls at each corner rising through pours up to 5.5 metres high.
At the Grand Union Canal, the design shifted to braced plate girder beams lifted onto shim packs, grouted in place post-installation, with full-height diaphragms finished fair-faced between the beams and first-stage abutment pours around 4 metres high. TAG installed Forterra permanent precast hybrid decking here, along with retaining walls at each corner, one of them a 104-metre-radius curved wall standing 7 metres high with a corbel detail and F3 feature finish to match the rest of the structure.
Two bridges, two very different structural solutions, delivered as a single £1.5m package that gave the Southall Waterside development the crossings it needed over both the brook and the canal.
