Oikos Fuel Storage Facility, Canvey Island
The Oikos fuel storage facility on Canvey Island is a live chemical storage site, which meant every element of this scheme had to be planned around restrictions and risks that don't apply on a normal civils job. Trant contracted TAG to supply all labour, plant and materials for the concrete package, and the team delivered it in tough conditions that included confined space works and cofferdams, all to a high standard and ahead of programme.
The structural scope was substantial: 800 metres of 2.50m-high reinforced concrete chemical bund retaining walls to contain the site's storage, and 4,000m² of reinforced concrete paved areas, process skids and platforms to carry the plant above them. TAG also built 4.50m-deep holding tanks, water filter tanks, pumping tanks and sump chambers, along with reinforced concrete substation platforms, transformer pits and service culverts.
Beneath all of that sat the foundations, circa 500 bridge foundations, plinths and pipe racks, plus a 5.50m deep reinforced concrete holding tank and further pipe culverts, sump chambers and pumping pits threaded through the site.
By completion, TAG had placed 2,500m³ of concrete, fixed 500 tonnes of steel rebar, cast 1,000m of reinforced concrete bund retaining walls, installed nearly 1,200 concrete foundations and pads, and laid 10,000m² of reinforced concrete pavement, a full civils package built around a working chemical facility without the site ever stopping.
