HM Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter Base, Lydd Airport
Lydd Airport became home to a new UK Search and Rescue helicopter base, run for HM Coastguard by Bristow, and Westridge brought TAG in to deliver the concrete works that would carry it. The job: an internal floor and perimeter beam for the new hangar, engineered for the loads a working SAR base puts on a slab.
It wasn't a simple flat pour. The floor covers roughly 1,860m² split across bays of differing thickness, from 225mm up to 525mm, all laid over a gas membrane. TAG fixed the formwork and steel for the concrete perimeter beam, formed the steel beam encasements around the hangar's structural columns, and built a service chamber into the floor.
From there the team installed solid joints and water bars to control movement and keep the slab watertight, placed the new internal concrete hangar floor and its bases, power floated the surface to the finish a working hangar floor needs, and saw cut and sealed the joints once it had cured.
All of it, from £123,000 worth of formwork, steelwork and concrete, went in between 2017 and 2018 while Lydd Airport stayed in full operational service throughout, no closures, no disruption to the airfield around the new hangar taking shape.
