A406 Power Road Bridge
The Power Road Bridge on the A406 was nearing the end of its design life, but TfL needed both the carriageways above and the Network Rail line below to stay open while it was replaced. Hochtief UK's solution was to rebuild the bridge in two phases: divert traffic onto the east carriageway, demolish and rebuild the west side, then divert traffic back so the east side could be completed in turn.
That phasing made the site itself the hard part. TAG's works had to be carried out under the existing structure without the benefit of mechanical lifting plant, in a narrow strip of working space, all while interfacing with live Network Rail lines running directly beneath.
Once piling was complete, TAG constructed the pile caps, abutments, wing walls, bridge decks and parapet sections that carried the new structure through both phases, delivering a rebuilt crossing without ever closing the road or the railway it spans.
